INFORMATIVE NOTE
In the Binaries Workshop held in Santiago de Compostela in February 2011, Drs. Scardia and
Prieur (as representatives of the PISCO group) presented a request to the IAU Commission
26 with the intention that it would be sent to the Cote d'Azur Observatory (OCA), asking
for necessary support for their group in terms of obtaining automatic speckle measurements
with a dedicated computer-controlled 1 meter telescope that belongs to OCA. The Commission
26 staff (8 people) approved the proposal by a majority vote. The Director of the OCA
responded that he would make all of the arrangements necessary in order to be able to
satisfy IAU recommendations.

NEW WIDE COMMON PROPER MOTION COMPANIONS TO EXOPLANET HOST STARS
In a new project to search for wide new physical companions to exoplanet hosts, Francisco
Rica has found new wide common proper motion companions to several exoplanet host stars.
Astrometric measures (using online photographic surveys and CCD cameras), astrophysical
characterization for the stellar components and a dynamical study of this new stellar
system will be performed. The astromechanics will be used to determine if the stellar
components for these new system could be gravitationally bound. The Table 1 lists same
basic astrophysical data and Table 2 lists astrometrics measures:

IRVING W. LINDENBLAD (1929-2011)
Irving Werner Lindenblad, graduate of Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT), Astronomer at
the U.S. Naval Observatory, 1957-1989, died 11 November 2011. He was 82.
His first work at the USNO was working in and later in charge of the Solar Program making
sunspot counts and determining their positions. In the mid 1960s he left this project and
began what was probably his most important work at the USNO, his careful observation of
the Sirius binary star system. The large magnitude difference (dV = 9.96) and close
angular separation (3".06 < sep < 11".94) of these stars have presented an observational
challenge ever since the companion's existence was ascertained from periodic proper motion
errors noted by Freiedrich Bessel in 1844.
Lindenblad utilized several techniques to obtain very accurate and precise relative
measurements of Sirius A and B (AJ 75, 841; 1970 & AJ 78, 226; 1973). The first was the
Hertzsprung photographic method, already well-established at the US Naval Observatory in
which he was an active participant (PUSNO 18, Pt. 7; 1969). Ejnar Hertzsprung developed
this multiple exposure technique for observing double stars photographically around 1914
at Potsdam. The technique involved taking one or more rows of 17 to 35 exposures of a
small field which normally includes only the double star itself. An important feature of
the technique is the use of coarse objective gratings to substantially reduce the
magnitude error by providing two symmetrically placed grating images of the primary star
of approximately the same size as the image of the secondary. However, the large magnitude
difference of Sirius presented special challenges. Lindenblad also utilized a hexagonal
diaphragm which produced a point spread function with a six-cusped image rather than the
usual Airy diffraction pattern of circular apertures. Rotation of the diaphragm allowed
the companion to be placed between the "spikes" for the companion to be observed. Rather
than the coarse grating of the Hertzprung method, Lindenblad used many evenly spaced
extremely fine wires to produce good first-order images. These were affixed in a steel
frame of mounting bars so that thermal expansion of the duraluminum hexagon was not
transferred to the wires. Finally, measures were made of higher order images to measure
and take into account the Ross effect, an emulsion contraction consideration. Making the
observations of Sirius AB with all of these innovative techniques, the observations taken
as part of this program remain the most precise ground-based measures of Sirius A and B
obtained. This work led to the best current V band estimate of the brightness of Sirius B
as well as (AJ 78, 205; 1973) ruling out possible higher order proper motion perturbations
and periodicities (i.e., the "Dogon" companion) or (A&A 41, 111; 1975) investigating the
"red" Sirius controversy.
In the mid 1970s, after the Sirius project, Lindenblad worked in the field of Earth
Orientation. He made particular study of the geophysical effects of the rotation of the
Earth and modeled polar motion and was in charge of the 65 cm Photographic Zenith Tube in
Washington. He became interested in possible tidal effects on polar motion and the
correspondence between lunar phase and seismic events such as earthquakes and volcanoes.
He predicted when Mt. Saint Helens would blow and told Dennis McCarthy on the Friday (16
May 1980) before the event (18 May) that if it was going to erupt, it would be that
weekend because of the phase of the Moon.
Recently, a cache of unreduced photographic plates of Sirius taken with Lindenblad's
methodology were uncovered, which yielded a total of 166 good observations of Sirius A and
B obtained on 68 nights from 1970 to 1984. There is an excellent chance we may be able to
improve upon the current "best" orbit of Sirius, that of van den Bos from 1960. The
greatest challenge faced in this task is replicating the accuracy and precision of this
excellent and careful researcher. What is clear at this point is that the results of his
innovative data acquisition methodology will continue to be felt for many years to come.

JESUS M. COSTA (1926-2012)
It is with sincere sadness that I inform you of the death of our colleague, Jesus-Manuel
Costa (retired in 1991).
Costa was a disciple of R. M. Aller and, as a member of the Spanish C.S.I.C., he played an
important role in the defense of our Observatory after the death of its founder in 1966
until a new Scientific Director was named in 1983.
His contribution to double star research is reflected in his micrometer measurements (CSA
code) and in the orbits published in the journal, Urania, as well as in the Information
Circulars of our Commission between 1978 and 1991.
Rest in peace!
J. A. Docobo

* A workshop will be organized next June in order to define the needs in a new reduction
of old observations mainly astrometric photographic plates in the scope of the arrival
of the Gaia catalogue and mainly for moving objects such as solar system bodies.
The creation of an international working group could be made during this workshop. I
thank you in advance and I would be glad to receiving your comments. Information on this
workshop at:

* 2014 Meeting of Commissions 26, 30 and 54?
The potential meeting for 2013 in the Caucusus will not be held due to a insufficient
positive response from members of the three relevant commissions. We are now focusing on
venues that are generally more accessible for a 2014 date. Possibilities at present are:
Brussels, Belgium summer
Flagstaff, AZ, USA summer
Washington, DC, USA spring
There has also been interest in Commission 42 for the meeting and it is possible that
the sponsoring commissions lists will grow.
Please let me or one of the other Commission VPs (30 Dimitri Pourbaix and 54 Gerard van
Belle) know if you are interested and if you have any venue preferences.
Brian Mason

ANNOUNCEMENT
THE CCDM
A Catalog of Double and Multiple Stars in the continuation of the ancient ones.
In the years before 1980, the idea of a very important astronomical space project was born
in the French astronomical community and after a few year of discussions, it rapidly took
shape. This idea was disseminated outside of France, especially in European and American
countries.
Meetings were organized and finally the European Space Agency (ESA) became involved. The
project of the launch of a specific European Astrometric Satellite was accepted.
Therefore, the contributions of the participating European Countries consisted of setting
up three consortia: INCA, FAST, and NDAC, to:
a) prepare the launch of the satellite,
b) follow the mission, and
c) take charge of the data reductions.
This organization officially started working in the year 1980. The project consisted of
observing 120,000 stars with INCA (INPUT CATALOG CONSORTIUM) in charge of the list. This
list was called the INPUT CATALOGUE and contained a specific sub-list of double and
multiple stars. Thus, FAST and NDAC were apparently not immediately involved but they had
to prepare their programs for data reduction.
Starting from a copy of the INDEX (1976.5)* of which the format was fundamentally changed
(as imposed by the need for the satellite to receive individual data for each component),
a sub-list of 14,711 systems was realized (Annex 1; vol 6, Double and Multiple Sytems of
the Input Catalog, C. Turon et al.) for the launch of the satellite on July 9, 1989.
After the Hipparcos launch, it seemed useful to publish this sub-list which had increased
to 34,031 systems (Communications de l'Observatoire Royal de Belgique, S'erie A, no. 115,
1994) under the name of "Catalog of the components of double and multiple stars" (CCDM).
The INDEX created by C. E. Worley, evolved with the new name, the "Washington Double Star
Catalog" (WDS).
Today, the CCDM contains some 68,000 systems (much less than the 116,000 of the WDS). But
it contains an important improvement, contributed by Omer Nys, a co-author of the Catalog
who, while retired, continued his very important work from the second edition
(Observations et Travaux, no. 51, January 2007) until his death in January 2007. This
contribution could have been lost if not accurately recorded.
Both the WDS and CCDM cataloges are issued from the INDEX around the years 1975-1980, but
evolved differently afterwards. The main difference between the two cataloges lies in
their formats: while the WDS has one registration for each double star (even inside
multiple sytems), the CCDM has one registration for each component. This was necessary in
order to assign only one piece of data per parameter.
The second edition (Observations & Travaux) contained only 49,300 systems. A detailed
description will be published in O&T as soon as possible. We expect this event in mid-July
2012.
J. Dommanget
* As mentioned in all of our publications on the subject.

KARL DRAGUTIN RAKOS (1925-2011)
A native of Croatia in the former Yugoslavia, Karl Rakos earned his doctorate at the
University Graz, Austria, in 1956. Soon thereafter he joined the Institute for Astronomy
of the Vienna University, his home for the balance of a distinguished scientific and
academic career. His research, from stellar astronomy to population studies in galaxies,
included photometric and astrometric investigations of visual binaries by photoelectric
area scanning, a technique of his creation. In recognition of his contributions to binary-
star research, Commission 26 elected him as its president for the term of 1985-1988.
With the death of Professor Karl D. Rakos, the astronomical community has lost an
exceptionally creative and productive member. However, his legacy will live on through the
significant contributions he has made to his beloved science, and in the careers he has
launched and fostered as an inspiring teacher and caring mentor.

* TYCHO 40-501-1: A possible new double (triple) star
On Oct. 23rd 2004 (2004.813 in Besselian Epoch), while testing the adaptive optics for
the Galileo National Telescope (TNG) at La Palma (Canary Islands), R. Ragazzoni, M.
Cecconi, S. Desidera, J. Farinato, and A. Ghedina, discovered that the star
Tycho 40-501-1 (R.A. 02h 02m 23.548s; Dec. +04d 19' 19.78" ; mv 10.72) has a companion
in position angle theta = 127.5 deg with separation rho = 0."35. A check performed with
the SIMBAD database allowed to realize that there is a third, fainter, companion distant
rho = 14".3, in position angle 339 deg.
Further observations, always made with the adaptive optics of the TNG on Nov 09th 2006
and Aug 16th 2007, confirmed the presence of the nearest companion in the same position.
Its estimated visual magnitude is mv=12.0 whereas the one of the most distant companion
is mv=13.5. The SIMBAD database reports for TYCHO 40-501-1 also the magnitude in V
(10.72) and B (11.49). Should such star belong to the main sequence, then the colour
index B-V = 0.77 would allow to assign to TYCHO 40-501-1 the spectral type K0V to which
corresponds an absolute magnitude Mv=6. On the other hand, spectra taken with SARG (the
TNG cross dispersed echelle spectrograph) by A. Fiorenzano on November 10th 2006 and
August 14th 2007, with resolution 144,000, denote that the object is a star of spectral
type G with a low rotational speed. The small discrepancy with the colours might be
likely due to reddening. So, the precise spectral class remains somewhat uncertain.
However, it should be between G and early K. Now, by applying the relation that bind
together mv, Mv, and the distance d from the Sun, a 0".114 parallax results. Further, in
the simplified hypothesis that the radius vector connecting the two stars is orthogonal
to the line of sight, the distance between the two components turns out to be 30 AU. For
what above, the system TYCHO 40-501-1 AB could well be a physical couple. Of course,
further observations will be necessary to confirm such conclusion.
Recapitulation: TYCHO 40-501-1 AB 2004.813 0".35 127.5deg 10.7 12.0
TYCHO 40-501-1 AC 2004.813 14".3 339.0 10.7 13.5
P.S. As the adaptive optics of the TNG have been caste off since some years, it is no
more possible to observe again this couple with said telescope in order to catch the
possible orbital motion.
